UW-MADISON GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP AND POSTDOC IN SCIENTIFIC WORKFORCE DIVERSITY, DATA SCIENCE, AND TEXT MINING.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Women’s Health Research (CWHR) is opening a research position which could be filled by either a graduate student or postdoc.
Position description: The project related to the position is a study of reasons why women and underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities fare worse in scientific peer review processes, such as for grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and manuscripts for scientific journals. In particular, the goal of the project is to develop and/or apply existing machine learning algorithms to text-mine critiques written by peer reviewers – an approach that shows promise for detecting bias in evaluation.
Responsibilities: The graduate student or postdoc is expected to take a lead role in identifying, applying, and evaluating the effectiveness of using different text-mining algorithms to analyze data from multiple corpora of critiques from scientific review processes available in our laboratory. The graduate student or postdoc will be expected to work closely with experts in machine learning and scientific workforce diversity; teach text-mining approaches to members of our lab, and publish his/her research results in relevant journals and present at national conferences. She/he is also expected to contribute to the set-up of new project proposals, participate in funding activities, supervise and/or train undergraduate and graduate students, and collaborate with other scientists and faculty with different expertise.
Requirements: This position requires a strong background and research experience in machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science, linguistics and natural language processing, and/or computational linguistics demonstrated through enrollment in a Ph.D. program and coursework in one of these areas (or a related area) for graduate student applicants, or receipt of a Ph.D. in one of these areas (or a related area) for postdoctoral applicants; and a record of publishing and conference participation. A strong background in quantitative study design and analysis is required; as are strong communication, teaching, collaboration and writing skills. Experience in the preparation and management of research proposals and projects (NIH, NSF) and a few years of work experience in a research context is preferred. Knowledge of scientific workforce diversity, social psychology and cognitive bias, and qualitative study design and analysis is desirable but not required.

This fellowship is based at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin and affiliated with the Veterans Administration Women's Health Clinic and the University of Wisconsin (UW) Center for Women's Health Research (CWHR)
The goal of this 2-year full-time fellowship is to train future leaders in academic health sciences who will be engaged in research, teaching, and program development that will improve the health of women.
a) Physicians interested in pursuing academic careers in women's health. Eligible physicians must have graduated from an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency; be board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, or Obstetrics & Gynecology and have an active, unrestricted U.S. medical license.
b) Eligible non-physician clinical postdoctoral fellows must be a U.S. citizen; hold a doctoral degree in Psychology, Nursing, Speech Language Pathology, or Pharmacy and research interests related to the health of women Veterans.
Research Program: Fellows identify a research mentor who must be committed to their career development. Most physician fellows enroll in a Master's degree program in Population Health, Clinical Investigation, or Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The MS in Population Health provides grounding in research methodology, statistics, and epidemiology;
Clinical Program: In addition to research and academic career training, fellows work 25% time clinically in the VA Women's Health Clinic. An array of clinical experiences is available to meet the training needs of each fellow. For psychologists, the requisite clinical supervision is provided.
Additional Activities: A full spectrum of supplemental clinical, didactic, basic or applied research activities are available. Each fellow completes an individualized career development plan (ICDP) around 6 core areas essential to a successful research-based academic career: research excellence in a chosen area, study design and statistics, leadership/management, scientific writing, oral presentation to a variety of audiences, and responsible conduct of research. The ICDP serves as a roadmap for activities and learning objectives to be accomplished during the AFWH.
